George Best was born on 22nd May 1946 in the Cregagh area of Belfast. He led an unremarkable early childhood and although he was never without his ball, he was considered to small to ever consider a career in the game, despite his obvious ability. However he was eventually spotted by Bob Bishop, the Manchester United scout. Bishop was so impressed with Best's ability that he sent a telegram to Matt Busby, the United manager telling him he had "found a genius". After a successful trial he was signed to the Red Devils.

George Best played at Manchester United for six seasons and scored 115 goals. His debut was against West Bromwich Albion aged just 17. Best formed a formidable combination with Dennis Law and Bobby Charlton. Too much for their opponents, Manchester United swept to 2 league titles and a European Cup, beating Benfica 4-1 in the final. That year was 1967 and Best was named European Footballer Of The Year.

Best's prodigious footballing talent coupled with his good looks made him the darling of the media in the same way that David Beckham has done in recent years. Off-field distractions soon started mounting up such as personal appearances, modeling contracts and nightclub ownerships. Best started to enjoy a hedonistic lifestyle and began drinking heavily. This signalled the beginning of the end for his fottballing career. One of his most oft repeated quotes is the answer he gave to the question "what have you done with all the money that you have earned?", which was: "I spent a lot of money on booze, birds and fast cars. The rest I just squandered."

George Best walked out on Manchester United for the last time in 1974 aged just 27. His last game was against QPR on the 1st of January. He made in total 470 appearances and scored 179 goals. He was the top goal scorer for six seasons in a row.

On the 25th November 2005, George Best died aged 59. He suffered multiple organ failure after becoming ill following his liver transplant in 2002. To prevent his body rejecting his new liver, he was put on medication designed to suppress the immune system. This obviously laid him open to new infections.

George Best will be remembered as a genius of the beautiful game who wasted his natural talent to drink. His dazzling appearances in a Manchester United shirt are what he will be most remembered for. His loyal Irish fans perhaps summed him up best when they said : "Maradona good; Pelé better; George Best."

The Man U FC shirt has gone through some significant changes over the years. When the club was known as Newton Heath, the strips were made up of yellow and green sections (1878 – 1892) with some additional colour schemes being employed such as a red and white shirt (1892-1894) worn with blue shorts. This all changed in 1902 when the club changed its name to Manchester United, the club radically altered the kit colours to red shirts, white shorts and black socks. This colour palette has been the foundation of the home strip ever since. The away strip is white jerseys, black shorts and white socks however different looks to this strip have existed. The most notorious of these was the all-grey strip employed in the 1995-1996 campaign. Manchester United lost all their games when wearing the grey strip, the players claimed that it was not visible enough and they kept losing their team mates on the field! Another variation was the all-black kit used in 1994 and 2003. There is also a "Third Strip". This kit, not often used, is all-blue in homage to the strip worn in the historic 1968 European Cup triumph.

The Man Utd shirt for home games this season is the traditional red with some alterations such as the vertical white stripe running down the back. A patch with the words "The Red Devils" on a picture of the club’s famous devil mascot is sewn onto to the bottom-left of the jersey. By contrast, the Man Utd away shirt in use today is white with blue piping at the edges. It has red trim on the neck and the club emblem is on a white background on the left breast. The team logo is on a white shield on the left breast. The emblem has been altered through the years but was originally designed based on the crest of the City of Manchester. One day Matt Busby was watching a local rugby team in Salford and was impressed by their flair and adventure on the pitch. When he discovered their nickname was "The Red Devils" he decided to attach it to his Manchester United team.

The player who has made more appearances for the club than any other is the legendary Ryan Giggs. On May 21st 2008, he passed Sir Bobby Charlton’s record of 758 appearances. On the 29th of April 2009, he made his 800th appearance in Manchester United’s 1-0 Champions League win over Arsenal.

He is the most decorated player in the history of English football having won the English Top Flight league on ten occasions at the time of going to press! In 2008 Giggs was short-listed along with four or his colleagues for the PFA Player of the Year. He won the award in April 2009, despite having started only twelve games this season. Many felt that Giggs had been wrongly overlooked for this award in previous years and it was fitting that he was finally recognised.

He has scored in every season in Premier League history and holds the record for the most goal assists. He has won two Champions League titles and has scored in twelve consecutive Champions League seasons. He was awarded an OBE in 2007 for services to football.

The away strip is white jerseys, black shorts and white socks however different looks to this strip have existed. The most notorious of these was the all-grey strip employed in the 1995-1996 campaign. The club did not win a single game when sporting the grey shirts. The team were vociferous in their claims that the drab colour meant they had difficulty seeing their team-mates, hence passes were being sprayed all over the pitch! Another variation was the all-black kit used in 1994 and 2003. There is also a "Third Strip". This shirt which is not often used, is an homage to the kit worn when the club won the 1968 European Cup. The team has occasionally used the strips employed for training sessions in actual matches although this has been a rare occurance.
